Mission & Outreach

As a community of faith, we are sent by God into a broken world to work for its healing and reconciliation. The church exists for mission. It’s woven into everything that we do.

Faith into Action

We regularly put our faith into action and help meet the needs of our community and our world by participating in hands-on service projects like preparing meals for a homeless shelter in Upper Darby, building homes with Habitat for Humanity in Chester County, serving at Broad Street Ministry in Center City, or joining together each year with our neighbors in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in West Philly.

Women’s Dining Circle

Every other month, the women of Overbrook are invited to come together for a meal in someone’s home. Each meal is a fundraiser designated for a particular project, such as Women Against Abuse or Heifer International. Women contribute whatever they would pay for the cost of a meal in a restaurant, and the money is matched by funds from the church’s Mission & Outreach budget. It’s a great way to do good, while also having a good time and meeting new people.

Calvin Presbyterian Church

We are partners in ministry with Calvin Presbyterian Church, a predominantly African-American congregation in West Philly. We collect canned goods for their food pantry. We hold joint services together during Holy Week. And beginning in 2011, we received a grant to fund a new program with Calvin, starting an urban community garden and feeding the hungry with fresh and healthy foods.

International Gift Bazaar

Every November, Overbrook sponsors a two-day International Gift Bazaar that is open to the whole community. The Fellowship Hall is filled with fantastic fair-trade crafts, food, and gifts from around the world, produced by local artists and artisans. Among our suppliers are Ten Thousand Villages, SERRV, Bamboula Ltd., Equal Exchange, and many more. Every dollar spent at the International Gift Bazaar helps guarantee a living wage for people in developing countries.

Mission & Outreach Budget

Each year, roughly ten percent of the congregation’s annual budget is dedicated to Mission & Outreach. Among the many agencies and projects that we support financially are Presbyterian Children’s Village, Broad Street Ministry in Center City, and the worldwide mission of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
