The primary mission of Sunday school at OPC is to provide a safe, nurturing, and non-judgmental environment where children can explore and discover their Christian faith.

  • Nursery – children up to age three cared for by paid caregivers, in addition to volunteers on a rotating basis (see Child Care).
  • Threes/Fours -  Participation in worship service, including “time for children”.  Sunday school with paid caregiver and volunteer teachers.  Curriculum is LIVE Big and includes story, snack, activity, and DVD component.
  • Kindergarten through Fifth grade – Participation in worship service, including “time for children.”  Sunday school uses Workshop Rotation Model, where children rotate through bible-themed workshops for four weeks, followed by a children’s worship service on the fifth Sunday.  Teachers volunteer for a specific workshop for each five-week rotation.
  • Middle School (grades six through eight) – Participation in worship service until after “time for children.”  They stay in worship for Communion and Healing Sundays.  Curriculum is bible-oriented, including activities and discussion.
  • High School (grades nine through twelve) – Participation in worship service until after “time for children.”   They stay in worship for Communion and Healing Sundays.  Volunteer teachers choose curriculum from Thoughtful Christian, Faith Findings, or a topic of their choice.

Mission/Service Opportunities for Sunday School Participants

  • Christian Children’s Fund – Any offering collected by Sunday school children each week is used to support Lamin Ceesay, a boy who lives in Gambia.  Periodic updates are provided by CCF.
  • Operation Christmas Child – During November and December, millions of gift-filled shoe boxes are distributed to hurting children around the world.  Our Sunday school children are invited and encouraged to create a gift-filled shoebox for one of these children.
  • Pencil Project – Sunday school children are encouraged to purchase extra school supplies during their ‘back to school’ shopping.  These supplies are donated to a Philadelphia public school in need of extra supplies.
  • Cents-Ability – Children are encouraged to collect pennies at each meal in a cents-ability can.  This change is collected each month and is used to fight hunger and poverty.
  • Philadelphia Society for Services to Children – During the Christmas season, children and their families may adopt a family or a child in need.  Clothes and a special gift are then purchased and given to the family.
